What Does it Mean For Me to Follow Jesus?

July 20, 2019

“Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” John 14:23-24

I recently read a question that was posed as part of the dialogue of comments in response to someone’s post. My summary of the question is, “Can a person who loves Jesus support our president. This question, like others that I have read recently have caused me to examine my own heart attitude.

The word Christian has come to have a lot of religious baggage so I describe myself as a follower of Jesus when I begin a conversation with someone about life and all the challenges humanity faces. Is there a difference between loving Jesus and following Jesus? It seems the answer to that question depends on how I define love.

As I pondered this question the scripture above came to mind where Jesus makes it clear that for me to love him is the same as for me to follow him and to participate in his work to reveal the true nature of God our Father.

If I am honest I have to admit there are too many instances where my thoughts, attitude and actions towards people I disagree with do not reveal the true nature of God our Father.
